DRAM Installation Procedures

Category : Setup / Operation
Safety precautions before installation:

Before installing DRAMs, please refer to the user manual or website of the host to check with the maximum supported DRAM quantity, capacity, type and speed information.

The figure below demonstrates the differences between DDR4 and DDR3. The notch positions between the two are different. Please make sure that the platform specifications are consistent with the DRAM specifications and that the installation direction is correct, otherwise the DRAM may be damaged.

Installation procedures:

1. Power off the host.
Press the shutdown button of the operating system to correctly power off the host.

2.  Remove the external power source
Remove the external power cord, detachable battery or power supply to ensure that the host is completely powered off.

3. Open up the case
How you perform this step may vary according to the model of the host. For specific instructions, please refer to the user manual of the host.

4. Grounding
Simply touch the unpainted metallic surface to complete the grounding  procedure. Grounding provides an extra layer of protection by  protecting the computer from static electricity that innately exists in your body.

5.  Find the DRAM notch
Since each host model is different, please refer to the user manual for the specific notch position of the DRAM.

6. Insert DRAM
Carefully hold the DRAM module on both sides and be aware not to touch the gold connector pins. When installing DRAM on the host, please hold the edge of the DRAM and align the notch with the protrusion.Apply even force on both sides on the top of the DRAM with your left and right thumbs and press the DRAM straight in until the latches are buckled.

When installing DRAM on a laptop, please hold the edge of the DRAM and insert it into the DRAM notch at an angle of approximately 30 degrees, and then gently press it down until the latches are buckled.

If you find that the notch position of the DRAM does not match the foolproof  protrusion, please do not insert it in forcibly.

7. Re-assemble the system
After the DRAM is firmly inserted, resume the other components to their original positions and reconnect the external power supplies that may have been removed.

8. Turn on the computer
Press the power-on button and the DRAM shall function normally.

Removal Procedures

1. Grounding
Simply touch the unpainted metallic surface to complete the grounding procedure. Grounding provides an extra layer of protection to the computer, preventing its components from being damaged by the static electricity that innately exists in your body.

2. Remove DRAM
When removing DRAM from a host platform, please press down the spring latches on both sides of the DRAM until the module is pushed up. You may then pull the DRAM straight up and remove it from the host platform.

When removing DRAM from a laptop, please gently push the spring latches on both sides of the DRAM with your thumbs until the DRAM pops up diagonally. You may then pull out the DRAM and remove it from the laptop.

Precautions for RMA Procedures

1. Please enter to the Transcend Warranty Service webpage or Transcend Services Center and fill in relevant information for your to-be-repaired item.

2. Please place the DRAM module into an electrostatic bag and a bubble bag for packaging.

3. Please put the well-packaged DRAM module between two pieces of foam, and send it back along with the box and the repair application form.
